Super simple homemade chili seasoning is a pantry must-have. Most spice cabinets hold the common ingredients to this DIY seasoning. Instead of always reaching for the packet-form for your homemade chili, create our Best Chili Seasoning recipe seasoning! Fall is around the corner so hop on it! 😉
When fall decides to show itself here in the panhandle of Florida, we are so ready. Cooler mornings and evenings allow for the doors to be open and fresh air to circulate. That’s about the time we start cooking all of our delicious soups and comfort casseroles. We go through our Southern Homemade Chili frequently and this seasoning is a must-have. It is so nice to know exactly what I’m throwing in my big pot of southern goodness, and the fact that it’s so easy to whip up doesn’t hurt either!
How is chili seasoning different from taco seasoning?
Chili seasoning and taco seasoning can be fairly similar. They both typically range from 5-8 ingredients. The primary difference between the two is that chili seasoning will have a higher concentration of chili powder and paprika. Taco seasoning will most likely have a higher amount of cumin. When in a pinch, you can use these two spices interchangeably with only a subtle difference in taste.
Do all chili seasonings have to be the same?
No they don’t! As a matter of fact, a lot of people out there like to tailor their homemade chili seasonings to their own specific tastes. Some like it spicier, so they are heavy-handed with the cayenne. Other’s can’t get enough of that smokey taste, so they add extra paprika. The recipe we created steers more towards a traditional chili seasoning. Nothing is overpowering the other and you get a great overall smooth chili taste.

I never realized how much sodium was packed into most of those little packs of pre-made seasonings you find at the store. Since we cook our chili with sausage, (which has plenty of salt already), we have a separate container with this blend minus the salt. It is super easy to vary this recipe for your specific health needs and tastes! Don’t be afraid to take recipes and tailor them specifically for yourself 😉
