Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Sweet fresh apples, yummy cinnamon and a touch of syrup combine with steel cut oats to make our delicious Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal. We love this because it’s awesome for a family gathering, brunch, or for meal prepping for the week. Don’t need that much?? Just half the recipe but keep the cook times the same. Easy and delicious, our healthy oatmeal is winning in our house this morning! ⁠

Over the holidays, I had a ton of family that stayed with us. I absolutely love it, but don’t always love coming up with meals to feed the group that don’t take a ton of time to prepare. I LOVE this recipe because it feeds everyone, is so simple to put together, and is way more balanced for my diet than cinnamon rolls or breakfast burritos. Don’t get me wrong… those choices are money sometimes. However, to be able to add all the ingredients to an Instant Pot- one’s I always have on hand – and press a few buttons is hard to beat!

Can I substitute rolled oats for the steel cut?

In this particular recipe, you can not. Unfortunately, the rolled oats cook so much faster than the steel cut that it would drastically alter the way this would cook.

What is the difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats?

Steel cut oats are oats that have been cut into 2 to 3 smaller pieces using a steel blade. They are also more coarse then other types of oats and tend to be chewier. They have a hearty texture that is very filling. Rolled oats require less cook time than steel cut oats and are often referred to as “old-fashioned” rolled oats. The difference in these oats is that they have been flattened and steamed rather than cut with a steel blade.

Ingredients for our Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal:

  • 3 apples, diced
  • 3 cups Organic Steel Cut Oats
  • 7.5 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup Organic Syrup

How to make Instant Pot Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal:

First step is to dice the apples. You will want to cut them into thin slices, then chop the slices into small bite-sized pieces.

Next, place the apples, steel cut oats, water, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and syrup into the pressure cooker. Put the lid on tight. Turn the pressure release level to the “Sealing” position.

Once lid is secure, press the ‘steam’ button and set the time for 4 minutes. It takes about 8-10 minutes for the pot to come to pressure before it starts cooking. *Be sure the lever is set to ‘Seal’ on top!

Once the timer beeps, allow the oats to naturally release for 10 minutes. Set a timer for that 10 minutes because the IP won’t beep again 🙂

After 10 minutes of natural release, vent any remaining steam by moving the lever on top to ‘venting’, with a long spoon or utensil. You want distance between your body and Instant Pot because a lot of steam will come out forcefully so you want to be as safe as possible. Being injured is possible to always take safety precautions, making sure no one is near the vent when you release steam.

Last, open the lid and stir! As you can tell from the picture above, it looks pretty wet still. That is because the oats have settled at the bottom. Thats the way its SUPPOSED to look! With a long spoon, stir for 2-3 minutes and it was be creamy and perfect!

Serve right away. Feel free to get creative with toppings. Add more syrup, nuts, berries, chocolate chips, granola – anything! Store leftovers, refrigerated, in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

It wasn’t until later in life that I developed a taste for oatmeal. As i’ve tried to create a more balanced diet and eat to fuel my body, oatmeal has become a breakfast staple. My husband has leaned that way as well. This recipe allows me to “cook” once provide multiple meals for breakfast. My kids like it so its also great on busy school-day mornings to throw this is bowl for the littles, reheat, and serve. They love it and I love the ease of it all.

  • 3 apples, diced
  • 3 cups Millville Steel Cut Oats
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup Organic Syrup

Instructions

  1. Dice apples in thin pieces.
  2. Add all ingredients to Instant Pot and stir.
  3. Secure with lid. Press "steam" and set for 4 minutes.
  4. Make sure lever on top is set to "seal".
  5. Once timer beeps, allow to naturally release 10 minutes.
  6. Release remaining pressure, remove lid, stir thoroughly, and serve!
