Grapefruit Tonic Cocktail

Grapefruit is perfect for a bright warm-weather drink. Tart, sweet, and refreshing, grapefruit is one of our favorite cocktail mixers. It can add an extra pop to a summer sipper or balance out a richer drink. This grapefruit tonic cocktail is perfect out by the pool, or just sipping on the porch while the kiddos play. Simple and easy to make, you’ll be preparing this cocktail year-round.

My husband’s drinking tastes vary from time to time. I rarely have a drink ready for him without asking because his preference can range from red wine to beer and on occasion, to a mixed cocktail. One night, a neighbor handed Matt a cocktail with grapefruit and he couldn’t believe how much he enjoyed it. Thats when we started experimenting with this grapefruit tonic cocktail. It’s simple. Its fresh. It’s perfect for our hot summer days. (I will say that this gin makes a huge difference also.)

How do you cut a grapefruit for our tonic cocktail?

Start by sectioning a grapefruit by cutting off both ends of a grapefruit. Turn the grapefruit so one of the cut ends faces you. Make several 1/4 inch slices into the outer edge of the grapefruit. Use the knife to peel the grapefruit. Cut off each section with the knife. Now it is ready to use!

Can you cut a grapefruit like an orange?

You can peel it and divide it into segments, like an orange. But a grapefruit has much tougher membranes than an orange, and I find them unpleasant to munch. However, with this recipe, keeping the peel on makes it much easier to squeeze, or juice. Another way to eat the grapefruit is to cut it in half, and scoop out the segments with a serrated grapefruit spoon.

Can you freeze fresh grapefruit?

Absolutely! You can store grapefruit in the freezer. Peel them and freeze them whole, or cut them apart and freeze the sections. Frozen grapefruit can be eaten right out of the freezer, tossed in water for a fruit ice cube, used in smoothies, or thawed and eaten later.
