Creamy, sweet, and filling, our Easy Berry Trifle is what your weekend is in serious need of! Fresh fruit combine with a yogurt and cool whip mixture for a light and refreshing side dish or dessert. Loved by both kids and adults, it’s a crowd pleaser for any summer event headed your way! Great for brunch as well, this dish can be served at all times of the day!
I have been making this recipe since before I could drive. My mom always designated this task to me as a kid because I think she knew it would be pretty difficult to mess up! Over the years, I’ve switched things up a tad to make it my own. My mom use to add some sugar to up the sweetness factor, but I choose to leave it out. The fruit already has so much natural sugar that I found the trifle really didn’t need the added stuff! This recipe makes about 10-12 servings which makes it great for gatherings. If I know I’m making it for my family, I just half all the ingredients 🙂
Can I make the trifle in advance?
Absolutely! You can make this up to 24 hours in advance without there being any issue. The issue with making a layered fruit dish ahead of time lies more with using frozen and/or canned fruit. They tend to have a lot more juices in them and when the weighted layers sit, they expel the juices and they run down and throughout the dish. That will make the presentation look less desirable and change the taste.
What are the layers of a trifle?
For this specific berry trifle, there are only three different types of layers. When making, you alternate between all the ingredients to form the trifle layers. We use a layer of strawberries, a layer of blueberries, and a layer of a yogurt/cream cheese/cool whip mixture. We use the yogurt mixture between every fruit layer. It makes the color and taste delineation much more defined and delicious!
Ingredients for our Easy Berry Trifle:
- Cream cheese, softened
- Strawberry Yogurt
- Lemon juice
- Cool Whip
- Almond extract
- Fruit: strawberries, blueberries
How to make our Easy Berry Trifle:
First, wash the blueberries. If you are using frozen fruit, be sure to let the berries thaw and then blot some of the excess juices off with a paper towel so that it doesn’t make the mixture runny. With our fresh fruit, we used 6 cups of strawberries (which was a 2-pound container) and 6 cups of blueberries.
Cut strawberries into bite-sized pieces.
Take the lemon and cut it in half. You will only need 1/2 of the lemon to get the 3 teaspoons of juice you need. Juice the lemon and set it aside.
Next, in a large bowl, mix the 5 ounces of cream cheese, 12 ounces of strawberry yogurt, and 3 teaspoons lemon juice together. Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix the entire 8 ounce Cool Whip container and 3/4 teaspoon of almond extract together.
Combine the cool whip mixture and yogurt mixture together and stir until fully combined.
In your trifle dish, place a layer of strawberries, then 1 cup of the yogurt mixture, and then one layer of blueberries. We use about 2 cups of fresh fruit per layer. Continue to layer until all ingredients are gone or your dish is filled. When layering the yogurt mixture, it won’t spread perfectly and that’s fine! Just maneuver the mixture around and make it even if possible.
Place remaining berries on top of the trifle and you are ready to serve! Enjoy!
One of the best things with this recipe is that you can tailor it to any gathering! You can add a few drops of food coloring to to the cool whip mixture to give the trifle extra color and a pop of fun! Use whatever fruit you have on hand: bananas, black berries, mandarin oranges, pears, raspberries – anything! The creamy mixture pairs well with all fruit! We love this is a side dish to our Guacamole Chicken Salad, Pineapple Jerk Chicken Bake, and Pesto Bruschetta Chicken Bake!
