The other day, I was in a pinch with my dinner options. I realized I had enough ingredients to make a main meal, but was scrambling with a side. I was making enchiladas and wanted something to complement it. I’ve played around with this recipe since then and came up with this side option after trial and error. It’s simple but more importantly, it’s a delicious complement to any dish!

Are refried beans healthy?

Yes and no. This food is low in saturated fat and very low in cholesterol. It is also a great source of fiber and a decent source of protein, vitamin C, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and manganese. The unhealthy part of refried beans is that they are very high in sodium. So you just need to take into consideration your health goals and evaluate.

Why are they called refried beans?

Refried doesn’t mean the beans have been fried twice. The title of the dish is of latin origin and thats where the name comes in. In Spanish “refritos” means ‘well fried’. It’s a common misconception because of the way the word translated between languages. They are typically soaked, and then fried in some type of fat/lard and seasonings, then smashed.

How to make our Cheesy Refried Beans:

First, empty a can of refried beans into a sauce pan.

Turn the stove burner onto medium-high heat. Slowly start stirring the refried beans. They will start to soften as they are heated through.

Next, add ranch seasoning and cheese to the beans. Mix thoroughly. Keep stirring until the mixture is heated completely and looks as if like its a whipped.

*You can use any ranch seasoning packet. We specifically make this one because it always so good and we know what’s in it!

Refried beans in a bowl

I can’t count how may times I’ve had refried beans at a restaurant and not really thought much about them one way or the other. They are also not something I had really thought about making either. Well, I had no idea what I was missing. I love being able to throw this together because I always have these 3 ingredients on hand. They compliment all of my hispanic dishes and are great any night of the week. It sounds so simple but trust me, but mixing just these three ingredients together really make a difference.
