Salsa Verde Tacos

Salsa Verde Tacos

Flavorful, fresh, and unforgettably delicious! These salsa verde tacos are so simple, no one will believe they were made solely in a crockpot. By combining just 5 ingredients in the slow cooker, they are ready in 8 hours to be devoured by whomever you are feeding that night. This is my husbands favorite night of the week, always bringing him back for seconds and thirds!

Salsa Verde Tacos

What is Salsa Verde made of?

Salsa verde is made out a vegetable called tomatillos. A tomatillo looks like a little green tomato covered with a husk. Salsa verde is really easy to make from scratch, all you need are tomatillos, onion, jalapeño, lime, and cilantro. However, when we are trying to make this dish quick, we grab this salsa verde and its perfect every time.

Can I use a different meat other than chuck roast?

Absolutely! We specifically choose chuck roast because it has really good marbling, making the taco meat tender and juicy. You can easily substitute with bottom round roast, which is typically a little leaner. You can also use a sirloin roast, but it can be a little tougher because of how lean it is.

Salsa Verde Tacos Ingredients

Ingredients for Salsa Verde Tacos

  • 2.5-3lb Chuck Roast
  • 24oz salsa verde
  • 6 Tablespoons Chipotle Tabasco
  • 6 Tablespoons Jalapeno Tabasco
  • 4 Tablespoons Agave nectar
  • Tortillas

How to prepare

Take chuck roast out of container and place in slow cooker.

In a separate bowl, combine 24oz of salsa verde with 6 TBS of jalapeno tabasco, 6 TBS of chipotle tabasco and 4 TBS of agave.

Mix and pour roughly 2/3 of mixture evenly on top of the roast. Reserve the remainder for taco topping.

Place on low and cook for 8 hours with top on.

While roast is cooking, make this amazing relish as the topping! It takes only 5 minutes!

When your 8 hours of cooking are up, shred with two forks while roast is still in the cooker. Set aside until ready to serve.

When building our tacos, we always start by spreading queso on the tortilla topped with the salsa verde meat, marinated tomatoes and onions, guacamole, and remaining tobacco-salsa verde mixture. Yum!

In the event that making our homemade relish is not on the menu, wonderful topping options are:

  • Sour cream
  • Cheese
  • Avocado
  • Salsa
  • Tomato
  • Queso
  • Black Beans

We always always make our marinated tomatoes and onions for this dish specifically. Don’t be limited by the title of the recipe. They aren’t just salsa verde tacos! You can use this beef for burritos or enchiladas or anything you want. One of my husbands favorite ways to eat it is the next morning as steak and eggs!

Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast

Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast

How, you ask, do you make the best French toast ever? Just swap out white bread and use Trader Joe’s Chocolate Babka instead! Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast- an all too easy way to take a breakfast classic and make it a weekend-decadent. A few favorite ways to top it off: powdered sugar, salted butter and maple syrup, or cream cheese and jam

Trader Joe's Babka French Toast

Do you ever have issues when trying to eat French toast at a restaurant? You know… when you order and it comes soggy, or bland, or just plain old gross? I refuse to order French toast when I’m out for breakfast or brunch. I’ve had such bad experiences in the past. Most of the time, the bread is soaked for too long or the custard is super eggy. This Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast will right all those past mistakes.

French Toast Mixture with sliced Babka

What is Brooklyn Babka?

Chocolate Babka is a sweet, swirly, cake loaf rooted in Eastern European Jewish traditions. Trader Joe’s Chocolate Babka is made for them by a small, kosher bakery in Brooklyn that literally grew out of a grandmother’s kitchen. That is why we had to choose this babka to cook with! The chocolate swirl is all melty when heated through and makes for the creamiest bites!

Can you freeze a babka?

Absolutely! Don’t be afraid to stock up on the baked babka loafs. They freeze beautifully so don’t hesitate to wrap them up in an air-tight sealed container, bag, or plastic seal. The bread can be frozen for up to a month! We live 3 hours from the closest Trader Joe’s, so when we make it to a store, we stock up since we know we can freeze it and not sacrifice taste! In the event you tackle the task of making your own Babka, the dough can freeze exactly the same way 🙂

What can you put on babka french toast besides syrup?

Here are 5 awesome options if you are out of syrup or up for trying something new:
-Frozen berries, heated with a little sugar to make a sauce.
-Powdered sugar
-Honey
-Apple sauce or yogurt
Jam

Trader Joes Babka French Toast Ingredients

Ingredients for Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast

  • 1 Loaf Trader Joe’s Babka Bread
  • 2 Egg Whites
  • 1 Egg, whole
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 1 TBS Cinnamon
  • 1 TSP Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup of Milk

How to make Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast:

Find a shallow dish to place your egg mixture in. You want it to be shallow enough to easily dip your bread slices.

First, mix the eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla together until well-combined

Next, slice your babka into slices. I find I get about 8-10 slices per loaf of babka bread. The pieces tend to be about a 1/2 inch in thickness.

Dip your babka bread into the wet mixture, one side at a time. Be sure to not soak too long – just enough to get a wet coating on the exterior of the bread.

Dredging Babka in french toast mixture

Immediately transfer the bread to your griddle, which should be heated at 350 degrees F.

Cook for approximately 4 minutes on each side. You will know they are ready by the crispy texture and slight-browning on the exterior of the french toast.

Last, transfer the cooked babka to a plate and garnish with your toppings of choice! We find powdered sugar, syrup, and strawberries to be the perfect compliment to this delicious dish.

French Toast on griddle

Now, as you start to cut into the babka, you’ll already notice it’s tricky to keep the slices in tact, so do this carefully.  Same goes for soaking in the egg bath, and flipping on the griddle, etc.  Use a spatula that is large enough to hold an entire slice to help avoid breakage.
If you’re not having any luck and your slices fall apart on you, just embrace it; pile up the pieces, layer on the toppings and serve as a ‘deconstructed’ (literally) french toast.  Look at you, so artsy 🙂

Simple Sausage Pasta Bake

Simple Sausage Pasta Bake

The simple recipe is easy to follow and the tasty ingredients will please anyone from a hungry toddler to a starving husband.

Finished image of the simple sausage pasta bake

Time is one thing I don’t always have a lot of. This dish helps keep my dinner routine uncomplicated and offer plenty for seconds or leftovers. It pairs easily with just about anything – veggies, garlic bread, or a nice salad like this one! You can make this simple sausage pasta bake ahead of time and pop in the oven whenever you want or prepare and throw right in the oven – dinner ready in under an hour from start to finish.

Can I use different meats for the pasta bake?

Of course you can! Italian sausage is very flavorful and something my family loves. We have made this dish with ground beef, ground turkey, and even crumbled meatballs. Whatever your family prefers is easy to substitute in this simple dish.

What is the healthiest sausage?

The healthiest sausage is turkey sausage. While untraditional, a sausage made from turkey is healthier than a pork-based one because it contains fewer calories and fat per serving. It still offers a more flavorful taste than ground beef because of the additional seasonings. It can have a higher level of cholesterol though so always read your labels if worried about nutritional value.

What if I don’t have the right pasta?

You can substitute most types of pasta in this dish. I wouldn’t recommend using any type of spaghetti or long noddle. It makes serving a little more difficult when dishing out the final product plus those types of noddles don’t take hold of the sauce and flavors as well. We use penne, elbow, rigatoni… anything along those lines. Just cook according to the directions posted on the box.

Adding mozzarella to stirred mixture

We are a family that runs on leftovers. This dish provides plenty for a family of 4 and leaves enough for lunch the next day. Whether heated in a thermos for my kids lunch box, or packed with my husband for his day at the squadron, no one is ever sad to see this meal come around twice!
